HOW TO SEED BARE SOIL OR TOPDRESS AN EXISTING LAWN
HOW TO SEED ON BARE SOIL
Early spring or late summer are best times to seed grass
Soil surface should be freshly cultivated before sowing seed
Broadcast seed evenly by mechanical spreader or by hand (for smaller areas)
To encourage new root growth, apply a starter fertilizer – do not use regular lawn fertilizer as you will burn your new seed
Seed rate recommended at a 1 lb/200 sq. ft. – applying too much seed is not beneficial
After the seed has been applied, lightly rake the surface with a leaf rake
Roll the surface with a light roller to get contact with the soil
Just leave the area alone and let it germinate naturally – No need to water as weather is ideal during peak seeding times
Do not walk on new seed until it is time to cut your grass
HOW TO TOPDRESS & SEED AN EXISTING LAWN
For bare patchers or thin lawns
Cut you lawn short and rake out thatch
Spread topdressing soil at approximently 1/2″ depth
Broadcast seed evenly with mechanical spreader or by hand (for smaller areas)
Apply a starter ferlilizer to encourage new growth – not regular fertilizer as it will burn your seed
The average seed rate for overseeding is 2lb/1,000 sq. ft.
Lightly rake the surface with a leaf rake
Roll the surface with a light roller
Leave the area alone and let it germinate naturally. No need to water until it starts to germinate
** Where existing soil is compacted (such as boulevards), the top inch or so should be scarified (cultivated) before adding topdressing soil
